Hit a couple of antique and thrift stores today. Grabbed this 1/2" - 2" sanding drum set for $5. Also scored these two boards for less than $5 to make frames. Any thoughts as to the types of wood? The small piece was some sort of a display. The grain looks like oak but I didn't think oak would be dark all the way through? Could it be walnut? Included a pic of the edge grain. Thanks!

I was thinking Oak at first too, but it also has that kind of open grain like Mahogany.

Not really a thrift store, but I’ve had my eye on some really thick boo cutting boards at my local Publix grocery store for a while now, but the were priced at $22 each.

I talked to the manager about them being so high, and that’s why they weren’t selling for them, and suggested they clearance sell them at reduced pricing and they’d sell.

Well lo and behold I go in last night and they were on clearance at $6.49 each....bought every one they had, and another set of two thinner ones packed together for $10.29......SCORE [emoji1690][emoji1690][emoji16]

      That's an awesome score, Darrell!

I think my pictures can be a bit deceiving. After working it, I'm leaning more towards walnut. When drilled it creates shavings that look like shaved chocolate. Also the grain isn't as open as it appears. Whatever it is I just hope it looks good finished. Might go with a teak oil bath.

Yup, Dayhiker Chalice. No core so it's a 3/4" board cut. Will keep the bands light.

That frame would look awesome with some of the Sumeike turquoise blue bands and matching lanyard, maybe a little matching inlaid turquoise design on the face of it .

Went back to one of the stores and found this little ball peen hammer. Nothing special about it, but when I was a kid I would visit my grandparents in Florida every summer. My grandfather had a toolbox that I used to love playing with. In it was a hammer 100% exactly like this one. For some reason the image of that hammer has stuck with me all these years and I always thought it would be cool to find one. And now I did!

peen.jpg Oh yeah, I also finished the Chalice and will post it separately.

No that handle is on solid. You can see a bit of it where it fits into the handle and there are no threads visible. Possibly press fit? There also seems to be some solder flowed in. Doesn't look like a weld.
