I've been tapering my bands with a 4mm difference from one end to the other. My question is, is this dimension fairly common, or is there a recommended dimension from one end to the other on tapering bands?

Tapering will all depend on the thickness of the rubber and the mass of the ammunition, and how much you want to gain in velocity vs how long you want your band to last.

A very common taper for example is using 0.76mm thick latex shooting 9mm steel balls, and tapers ranging from 25mm to 20mm, 25mm to 15mm, I've even seen very aggressive tapers like 30mm to 15mm

I think it will ultimately come down to your own preferences, of course matching your latex to your ammunition first
