Here's one I did recently from a dead Desert Ironwood fork. Thanks for looking! [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

It's malachite for the wings, lapis for the body, and turquoise for the antlers. [emoji4]

I'm one of those weirdos that doesn't mind the smell. It's kind of like...cheap pancake syrup? And no shortage of smell with all the dust generated from that thing--almost exclusively I used a belt sander, disc sander and Dremel.

(And yes, at all times I wore a respirator and had the shop vac running about an inch from the piece, straight into a HEPA filter. )

I put a thumbs up on your post, but I would put two thumbs up if I could. In the 3rd picture from the bottom, is that a metal rod inserted into the handle? If so, I'm curious as to why?

Yes, it's an aluminum rod going down about 3-4 inches. Old Ironwood like this is either famously hard, or totally rotted into dust. Seriously, all or nothing...It's maddening. And you never know until you get deep into it; then you can tell by the sound it makes when you knock on it. This one sounded a bit hollower than I'd like, so I drilled out the "core", poured in about two tubes of CA glue to soak into any weaker interior wood, and then stuck the rod in with epoxy. Seems to be holding up just fine now. [emoji4]
