    Today I had the rare opportunity to help with some cone collecting at work. Anyone else get paid to use a slingshot at work? :D

      I'm imagine after the shooting you make a small fire with those fallen branches and cook some coffee.

      Sometimes I get paid to plink or work on a new frame at work. I'll find me a cozy little corner or a quiet mechanical room and hope no one sees me ! ;)

      You better put that thing away before you hurt yourself...If 'they' knew what I did while I was getting paid over the last 30 years, I am sure it would have caused 'them' heart attacks, and ass-attacks, for that matter, too

      That's Mt. Rainier in the background. We were collecting cones from trees in the White Pass Ski Area.

      Dear Friends,
      This thread has triggered my curiosity :)
      When I go shooting, I burn the cones to makes fire and cook coffee.
      The burn very good and add a nice aroma to the coffee :tu:
      What do you use the cones for?

      You are correct but that is not what we were doing with the slingshot. We used the slingshot to shoot a line over the branches which we used to pull a rope over the branches so we could climb the trees and retrieve the cone cages that were placed in the trees earlier in the season.

      These whitebark pine cones will be sent off for genetic research. They will be looking for trees that have a resistance to blister rust fungus. Here's a link to a previous similar study:
