Well, @Devils son in law already posted a couple shots of the finished sling, but I thought I'd give you guys a quick build along thread. Here's where I started—A slightly gnarley maple fork that felt really comfy in my left hand (I'm a right hand hold):

Next, since this was for DSIL, it had to have a fancy butt cap, so I used a piece of box elder burl from a huge burl I cut up. A nail and a spacer were used with 5 min epoxy to glue everything up:
    IMG_4934.jpg IMG_4935.jpg IMG_4936.jpg
Then off to the spindle sander:
    IMG_4938.jpg IMG_4941.jpg
Hand sanding with gaps and holes filled with 'lifts' of super glue.

Box elder burl has a lovely intense red color, which comes out with finishing. I didn't want a strong yellow tint that unboiled linseed oil gives wood, so I used mineral oil instead to keep it untinted. A quick rub of wax, and she's done!

Hope you enjoyed the build along!

Very nice job on that fork......Question on the nail ?

Are you using the nail as a placement pin, to keep the butt cap from walking or floating around on you during glue up ?

You got it. It was awkward to clamp, so this kept everything aligned. 5 min epoxy is plenty strong enough, especially for a butt cap, so this just kept it all lined up.

Thanks for all the comments guys! I'm definitely going to do more stuff with the burl since I really liked the way it turned out. And kudos to DSIL for starting me on the butt cap trail!

I love natties and like seeing other guys work, so keep your phone with you at the work bench and take a couple shots as you go to share. It doesn't have to be wordy either—The shots usually do the talking. Thanks for checking out my build!

I'll pin everything as well, as you said, it keeps everything in place and adds some strength from any lateral torque during use.

Perfect solution to that age old problem of floating joints at clamp up.

If you’re ever doing wide board to wide board glue ups, another great trick there is to sprinkle a little salt on the faces before mating and clamping.....the salt gives it “gription”, [emoji38]

Thanks for all the comments guys. I should also mention (Though it's probably obvious) that butt caps are a great way to add length to a short fork. They don't weaken the forks, and you can even change the curve of the handle by adjusting the angle of your cut when you attach the cap. That's what I did with this one.
