I've made small batches of paper micarta and I used West Systems epoxy because that's what I had. It is not cheap and I think if your going for a thicker slab there has to be less expensive options.

I also use west systems,, but I also got a chance to test a few other epoxies and after it cures,, the noothers just didn't stand up as well,,, smashing and bending tests Included, and my west systems micarta can take a few forkhits..
Whatever you like for materials, the thicker the material s the fewer sheets you'll use, but I think thinner material is probably stronger at the same thicknesses.

Metro used brown paper bags, I've also seen a variety of other fabrics, I'm sure you must have an old bandanna or 2? I've heard paper micarta is not as strong as cloth so they are normally just used for scales. Basically if it's a porous material I'm pretty sure it can be made into micarta so you are only limited by your imagination. I want to try it one day.

I have a knife with micarta scales made from burlap. I gave a dude a bunch of old carbon steel butcher knives and he cuts them down, reshapes and cleans them up, and puts good scales on them to make hunting and bushcraft knives. It looks pretty good and seems near indestructible.
