Sticky Ammo Weight and Energy Charts

    To help sort out the various kinds of ammo, I made the following chart that compares the weight and number of balls per pound of different kinds of ammo. It shows for example that for .40 cal lead, the closest steel ball is 7/16", and the closest clay ball is 18mm (depending on the density of clay, which varies widely).

    The numbers for hex nuts (and probably most of these kinds of ammo) are approximate - I'm not sure how standardized they are across all manufacturers. Densities are mostly taken from this source:

      @Clever Moniker, I can look into it, but I'm not too familiar with the common sizes to include in the chart. Can you suggest a range?

      there is also the issue of imperial and metric sizes @Clever Moniker? M8 weigh in at 4.5 grams. M10 at 10.5 grams and M12 at 15.3 grams.

      Yes, obviously there will need to be imperial and metric sizes.


      I think Toddy has the right idea here with:
      m8, m10, m12

      For imperial, maybe:
      5/16, 3/8, 7/16

      I added a few hex nuts to the chart. Thanks @Toddy for the weights on the M8, M10 and M12. I have a feeling though that the exact weights vary across manufacturer. Also, there is apparently something called "heavy hex nuts" which are a little less than double the weight of "standard" hex nuts; the chart shows "standard".

      Funny. My two favorites are a step apart. 5/8 marbles and 7/16. I knew I saw some regularity in their performance.
