    Butterfly

I really like to shoot full butterfly but the accuracy is too poor. I have certainly been testing for a month or so. I hit a can 4-5 times of 10 in 10 meters. But it feels good in both back and arms, Butterfly shooting is something that suits my body quite well. The drow weight is also absolutely wonderful, easy to pull but still good speed.

Obviously, I have a bit of a hard time getting the correct releases because I spread the shots too much. Also get some forkhits lower part when I fail to align correctly and get the wrong angle in the rear floating anchor point. However, I have figured out how to avoid it, by memorizing a perfect shot piece by piece.

    Short draw

Short draw works much better when it comes to accuracy, but it hurts the whole body. I hit a can 9-10 times of 10 in 10 meters. Here is the results for 40 shoots on 20 meters https://www.slingshotcommunity.com/threads/target-practice-20-meters.48443/

To get the shots good, I really have to work with my back in such a way that it is simply not nice. I get the feeling that I am completely compressed and bent forward to get the lines aligned correctly. I turn the pouch to get good contact with my anchor point then the top band bends which makes it difficult to line correctly.

The draw weight is a bit too heavy for me if you want to have good speed, which in itself is a challenge.

    How to think?

Continue working with butterfly because that is what feels best. Or stand out and keep traing with short draw and hit what you aim for?

I stopped using an anchored short draw with one eye closed 3 years ago. It felt confined, like a forty hour work week. I now shoot a long draw(maybe 1/2 butterfly) with a floating anchor and both eyes open. It feels free and easy like being unemployed.

I give it a trie again... Mabey the last trie that I had to hard bands... I will go back tom my 100% slingsthot .45 330-15-7 the Snipersling .50 340-15-7 is have more power and harder to draw.

I have watched a few times on your video, I hold my palm up and the ammunition in the same way as you even though you have palm in the other direction.

5-6 months ago if I think about it, I did not hit better with a short draw so it might come .. even here with a little practice. However, I have always managed without fork hits before: /

A shuttle craft or starship could give you a longer draw and lighter pull with a fixed anchor.

That's interesting. I got fork hits trying to hold palm up also.

I was dedicated to the 1/2 butterfly for a good 3-4 months (my back / shoulders wouldn't take the full butterfly) - I was surprised how accurate a floating anchor could be and enjoyed the speed & was getting pretty decent at it, but I just couldn't stand the random flyers that would come out of nowhere - sometimes all it takes is an every so slight graze of the cheek on the way past. As target/spinner accuracy is my goal, I settled on the anchored short draw & am much happier with the results. My only advice for the short draw is play around with rotating the pouch - I found that keeping my knuckles horizontal on the anchor is far more comfortable than knuckles vertical - feel all scrunched up that way.

Longer draw is still my fave for shooting cans though - can't beat it for that...

I'm happy to report that I'm hitting 1" spinners at 66' repeatedly(4-5 times) with my long draw and open eyes....it feels good.

Holy schnikes man - thats solid by any measure. I'm lucky to get 7 or 8 out of 10 on a 4cm spinner at 33 ft (I do shoot both eyes open though). I would have way too much ammo drop at 66 ft - would have to get back to 1/2 butterfly to send it at that range.

Do you get the occasional random flyers that are just unacceptably far off target with the long draw (I just don't have that problem with the short draw) ? For me seems to be a function of pouch grazing my cheek best as I can tell...

It took me 8 years of daily practice. I get lazy with my release sometimes and that will send the pouch close to or striking my cheek.

    Alot of good information here...!!

Do you get the occasional random flyers that are just unacceptably far off target with the long draw

This is the same for me... I dont know why its happen... with short draw I can think whats goes wrong but with longdraw I cant the shoots feels the same as a god one.

I have to test change my palm again mabey the lower end forkhits disappears if I had my palm donwn.

What do you think about testing something in between? A long pull but not full butterfly?

For me, the length of the longer draw is a function of band length. The cheap chinese made bands I buy on eBay / amazon only allow me to go back to about 1/2 butterfly - those pre-made bands make it easy to determine how far back I can go...

A finger injury on the index finge now, so short draw is now an impossibility some months ahead. This meant that the option to choose long or short draw did not exist if I wanted to continue shooting.

Due to my injury, I also do not get a good release when I run a long draw, which has made me use half butterfly instead, which actually feels damn good :)

Now I get better releases than before my injury and have a completely different control. I also have a better accuracy than ever with a full butterfly.

Maybe half butterfly is the solution to this whole question ... It actually feels like I could train and get the same accuracy if not better with half butterfly against shooting short draws. All the strange feeling of shooting short draws has disappeared, but the accuracy is almost the same even though I have now only tested for a few weeks.

It feels like I put down a full butterfly shooting and instead bet on half butterfly, it is such a huge difference in accuracy for me .. I still have long arms with a wingspan of 170 cm, which means that I still get good speed on the stuff with same draw weight regardless of short, half or full draw.

So, how are you gripping the pouch while your index finger heals?

between the thumb and middle finger and with a half butterfly it is much easier to get the right angle on the pouch.

    (Cant bend indexfinger)

When you figure out elongation and taper for short draw, most any thickness of latex can be a smooth draw. I shot butterfly exclusively for the better part of 2 years, and this year went back to short draw just for the savings on latex and the convenience of it. Butterfly isn't friendly with drawing in tight spaces, and I had to go to work. It's taken me the better part of a year to learn what I have, and I'm about to make an indepth post about it.

I can understand that, For me personally I still going for the half butterfly but I have shorten the bands and taper from 15-7-340 to 18-12-290 I have also change bands from ,45 to ,50 or ,55 to handle the swedish cold winter weather...

Yesterday I shoot in -19 degrees then I had to go for ,55 bands and clay. However, I only managed to shoot 25 shots ... before my fingers were completely frozen.

This is a very interesting thread. I'm drawing back to my shoulder (~100cm) which is where my arm naturally stops and I can have a solid reference for a floating anchor point. The next reference is full butterfly (palm up) which is again a natural limit where the arm stops. Anything in between is not as precise and depends on perceived band resistance. Still figuring things out...

To answer the original question - if you're not hunting, go with what feels more fun to you. If it's fun you'll shoot more, and you'll become better. I have issue with pulling heavy bands, so the longer the draw, the better if feels for my wrists.

I've noticed that different pouch holds feel more comfortable at different draw lengths. Ammo pinching clay (Hai style) feels more comfortable behind my shoulder for some reason, but my normal pouch hold for small steel needs to be more forward...

I think I'm doing alright for 8 months of shooting. We'll see in a year... Thanks again to all the forum contributors.
