Just a little lizard....

...made from some spalted beech. The leftover of my latest knife project.

The wood is vacuum filled with BLO and finished with a carnauba/beeswax mix.

Very nice, but may I ask, what do you mean vacuum filed with BLO ? I am fairly new to SS, and I am trying to learn.

Thanks Z-Man. BLO is boilded linseed oil. I've put the fork in pot filled with this stuff and applied vacuum. With breaking the vacuum, the wood is completely soaked. Sometimes I use epoxy resin for that procedure, but the wood feels like plastic afterwards. BLO needs some time to cure, but the feel is still like wood. I like that best. This is my litte DIY vacuum-chamber...

Happy New Year, Flicksie! The little "Lizard" design is simply beautiful. One of THE prettiest, most elegant PFS shapes. It looks familiar tho, so I may be a bit bias.

And the grain on this spalted beech could not have been more lovely if you had planned and painted it onto a canvas. A very stunning matched set.




Also very clever idea on pulling vacuum on the BLoil. I would not have considered anything else beyond the Stabilizing Resin. More exciting possibilities perhaps…

 

Hello and happy new year my friend! Thank you! Interesting thing with that wood is, that you will never know the grain and pattern inside. I really like the BLO vacuum thing. At first I thought that it won't cure completely. I made a test with some 20 mm thick beechwood. It took almost 2 weeks until it was fully cured, but it works. It is really hard now, (not comparable with Epoxy resin tho) but the feel of the surface is much better than "epoxied"

 

That's a beautiful Shooter! I was hoping you could maybe talk about how you made the lid for your vacuum chamber, I need a larger tank and that looks like a good option. Thanks in advance, Dave

 

Thank you Dave. The lid is made of a piece of 15 mm plexi. I did not had any problems with that material up to now. I've cut a 1/4 " thread and attached a quick connector for compressed air devices. They work with a vacucum too. The gasket is cut of a 2 mm thick sheet of rubber. I think it is used as a anti-slippery mat in cars. It works great.

Really nice!! i have never tried a pfs, but will try this one! (got some nice solid walnut wood..) is there a special trick, except twitching the pouch and flikking the catty, for shooting this size of pfs?
